84.  Alexander Donald had procured for TJ in London another Dollond telescope, probably one of the two now at Monticello (Donald to TJ, 10 Mch. 1793; MB 21 Mch. 1786).

85. TJ visited the George Logans at Stenton during the time between House and Senate passage of the so-called “Logan Act,” which prohibited private citizens from negotiating with foreign powers. During the debates on this bill, the Federalists repeatedly attempted to implicate TJ in Logan’s private mission to Europe (Frederick B. Tolles, George Logan of Philadelphia [New York, 1953], p. 185-204).

86. Vermont congressman Matthew Lyon (1750-1822), a defendant under the Sedition Act, had been imprisoned in Oct. 1798 and fined $1,000. The fine was paid by a subscription among leading Republicans initiated by Virginia Senator Stevens Thomson Mason (1760-1803). Callender the Republican journalist to whom TJ gave his greatest financial support, Lyon had just established the National Magazine; or, a Political, Historical, Biographical, and Literary Repository, publishing it twice a quarter at Richmond and then at the District of Columbia from June 1799 to the fall of 1800. 96. TJ here supported the further publishing endeavors of James Lyon, who established in Staunton in Jan. 1800 a weekly newspaper, the Political Mirror, which was published until at least Aug. 1801 (Brigham, History, ii, 1156-7 description begins Clarence S. 97.  Richard Johnson had brought suit in chancery to compel TJ to convey to him the one hundred-acre parcel of TJ’s Pouncey’s tract which had been devised by PJ to James Spears and deeded back to TJ in 1797 by Spears’ grandson John Spears. John Snead, son of TJ’s tenant at Pouncey’s, then purchased from John Spears’ father William a spurious deed to the parcel and sold it to Johnson, who sought to have it validated by the courts. This “fraudulent and unwarrantable” combination impelled TJ to bring cross-actions against Johnson and Snead, invoking the statute against disturbing the titles of persons in possession of lands by buying and selling pretended rights to them. In 1804 TJ received favorable decisions in the chancery proceedings in Richmond, but he lost the actions against Johnson and Snead in the district court at Charlottesville. These actions were used as political ammunition by one of his Federalist enemies (TJ MS, response to Washington Federalist of 18 May 1804, signed “A Bystander,” 21 May 1804, DLC; Edmund Randolph to TJ, 16 Sep. 1804; MB 15 July 1797, 24 May 1804).

99. Bolling Island is part of Goochland County on the James River about two and one-half miles below present Cartersville, Cumberland County. Adams’ falls, later known as Magruder’s falls, was on the Rivanna River, probably near the mouth of Mechunk Creek in northwestern Fluvanna County (TJ “Notes on the clearing of the Rivanna River,” Papers, i, 88).

1. TJ made this charitable contribution in the guise of a subscription to fifty copies of Callender’s book in preparation, The Prospect Before Us (Sowerby, No. 3518 description begins E. 3.  Thomas Jefferson, Jr. (1783-1876), the son of RJ and Anne Jefferson Lewis Jefferson (d. 1808), first married his double first cousin Mary Randolph Lewis. Isaac was deeded to MJE and JWE on their marriage in 1797, but was hired by TMR and spent the next twenty-six years at Edgehill and Monticello.
