From Thomas Jefferson to St. George Tucker, 2 August 1798

To St. George Tucker

Th: Jefferson presents his respectful compliments to mr Tucker and through him to mrs Tucker, mr & mrs Carter and will be made very happy by seeing them at Monticello tomorrow.

Mrs Tucker, Lelia Skipwith Carter Tucker, was a daughter of Sir Peyton Skipwith and the widow of George Carter of Corotoman. View Mount was a Fauquier County property of the Carter family, and the Carters mentioned above may have been her late husband’s father and stepmother, Charles Carter of Shirley and Ann Butler Carter, or one of Lelia Tucker’s brothers-in-law and his wife (VMHB description begins Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, 1893- description ends , 9 [1901], 63n; 22 [1914], 380–1n; 31 [1923], 53–5; WMQ description begins William and Mary Quarterly, 1892- description ends , 1st ser., 2 [1894], 202n).
