New York, April 26, 1798. “I am much supprized by being informed by my Wife that you cannot find either my papers or any way of Coming at the property so long withheld from me.… Exert yourself & not lett me Linger Longer in this Bastile while my family are Sufferring at home.…”

An entry in H’s Law Register, 1795–1804, reads:

I have accepted conditionally an order in favour of Thomas Payne for 221 Dollars” (AD, partially in H’s handwriting, New York Law Institute, New York City). A similar entry appears in H’s Cash Book, 1795–1804, under the date of April, 1798, in a section entitled “Memoranda” (AD, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress).
Payne, a New York City cabinetmaker, was Williams’s creditor.
