John Francis

John Francis was the owner of the hotel at 13 South Fourth Street in Philadelphia that served as TJ’s residence while in the city during his years as vice president, as it had previously for John Adams. Two senators (John Brown of Kentucky and John Henry of Maryland) and seven representatives (Nathaniel Freeman, Jr., Thompson J. Skinner and Joseph B. Varnum of Massachusetts, Matthew Clay and Walter Jones of Virginia, William B. Grove of North Carolina, and Abraham Baldwin of Georgia) also lived at the Francis hotel in 1797 (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C.
