I beg your Acceptance of a Publication (which I have taken the Liberty to inscribe to you) designed to check the Progress of Infidelity and Vice, and to promote the Interests of Truth and Virtue.1 I shall be happy if the Work shall be honored with your approbation, and am, with sincere & great Esteem, Dear Sir, Your most obedient and very humble Servant

1. Ogden sent his Antidote to Deism. The Deist Unmasked; or An Ample Refutation of All the Objections of Thomas Paine, Against the Christian Religion … (2 vols., Newark, N.J., 1795). Ogden had dedicated the work “To George Washington, Esq. President Of the United States of America, The Patron of Science; The real Patriot; The Father of his Country, And the sincere Christian; This Defence of Divine Revelation, As a Testimony Of Esteem and Respect, Is Inscribed by The Author.” The volumes were in GW’s library at the time of his death (Griffin, Catalogue of the Washington Collection, description begins Appleton P. C. Griffin, comp. A Catalogue of the Washington Collection in the Boston Athenæum. Cambridge, Mass., 1897. description ends 154).
