Dear Sir
Mr Hyram Faris a young man of good character and good constitution and able bodied, whose father and family have been many years residents of this place, has applied to me to recommend him to you for a lieutenancy in the marines to be raised to serve on board the Frigates.1
Should you think proper to comply with this request, you will oblige me, and a deserving young man who I am confident will not disgrace my recommendation. With sentiments of the highest respect and esteem I remain Dear Sir Yr most obdt hum. Servant

1. Hyram Faris (1769–1800), son of the Annapolis silversmith William Faris, was himself a silversmith. He also was recommended by Maryland governor John Hoskins Stone, who wrote on 23 Nov. that “Mr Faris is a young man of a reputable family in this City, of a fair character and considerable ingenuity—and I do not doubt if he obtains the appointment his making a good Officer” (ALS, DLC:GW).
