To John Jay from John Trumbull, 24 March 1795

From John Trumbull

Paris March 24th. 1795.

Dear Sir

I landed at Havre the Sunday after I left you, and have been in this City some days.

Mr. John Pigot of whom you requested me to enquire, has heard of his Father’s Death, has obtained a passport to leave the Country, and will soon be with his Friends.1

I have met Mr. Catellan2 our Consul at Marseilles who is particularly acquainted with the Swedish Consul there and informs me that He and all his Family are very well,

The Condition of the English Women and Children who were arrested at the commencement of the War, is now perfectly easy and many have been permitted to return:—

I have not ascertained the actual situation of several whose friends requested information, but am informed that there remains no objection to writing: in short one great object of the Government appears to be to bury in Oblivion the wretched Scenes which are past and to reestablish Justice and Humanity. The Proceedings against the Four accused members appear to be firm but temperate; and although the atrocities of Jacobinism are completely detested; the City is tranquil, and waits with confidence the Decision of the Government.

Mr. Codman3 is not in Town, but I am told He has obtained and forwarded to you, the papers which were requested.— I have written to him:4 & when I receive his answer I shall know whether any thing remains to be done on this Subject.

There are Letters from New York by way of Falmouth so late as the 17th. February, but I learn no political News, I hope you have by this time an account of the probable Fate of your Labours— what Explanations I have had an opportunity of making on this Subject appear to be satisfactory.

I enclose a Line for Mrs. Church,5 and have the Honor to be with all Respect Dear Sir Your most obedient Servant and friend

Jno. Trumbull
