Alexander Hamilton Papers

To Alexander Hamilton from Edmund Randolph, 10 January 1794

From Edmund Randolph

Philadelphia, January 10th, 1794.

E. Randolph begs the favor of Colo Hamilton, to inform him, whether the bills mentioned in a note the other day,1 on Amsterdam for the use of our ministers, be attainable? Mr. Marshall is going to England in a day or two,2 and E.R. wishes to inform them of the supply.

LC, RG 59, Domestic Letters of the Department of State, Vol. 6, January 2–June 26, 1794, National Archives.

2James M. Marshall, brother of John Marshall, left for England on January 21, 1794, with dispatches for Thomas Pinckney, United States Minister Plenipotentiary to Great Britain, and letters for others in England (Marshall to Randolph, January 21, 1794 [ALS, RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters, 1790–1799, National Archives]). According to John Marshall’s biographer, James M. Marshall went to England at this time to complete the purchase of the Fairfax estate in the Northern Neck, “embracing over one hundred and sixty thousand acres of the best land in Virginia” (Albert J. Beveridge, The Life of John Marshall [Boston, 1919], II, 203–04).
