Sir

Elapsed as so many poor inhabitants of hispaniola who have lost here their fortune. I am about purchasing a little settlement in the Connecticut’s state. Would you Sir Do me the favor to answer me if I Can Depend upon the protection of united States after my naturalisation. In that Case I would return to hispaniola for 6 or 8 months at most, and bring with me the revenue of my plantation and other goods I Can yet have in that unhappy Country. I am with the most profound Respect your mos obedient servant

After purchasing a farm in Lyme, M.F. Joret de Longchamps, by his own account a native of France who had fled Hispaniola, petitioned the Connecticut General Assembly for naturalization or the capacity to hold lands and in October 1793 was granted permission to buy and secure title to lands in that state on the same footing as citizens of Connecticut (Pub. Recs. Conn. description begins Charles J. Hoadly and others, eds., Public Records of the State of Connecticut, Hartford, 1894–, 9 vols. description ends , viii, 121–2).
