Philada July 17th 1793

Gentlemen,

The President of the United States has this day received your letter of the 19th ultimo with the pamphlet accompanying it; for your politeness in sending of which to him he directs me ⟨to⟩ beg your acceptance of his best thanks.1 I have the honor to be Gentlemen, very respectfully Your most Obet Ser.

1The letter from William Allum and William Talbot to GW of 19 June 1793 and its enclosed pamphlet have not been identified. Allum and Talbot were partners with James Lee in the New York City firm of Allum, Talbot, and Lee, at 202 Queen Street, which imported goods from India (New-York Daily Gazette, 14 June 1793). Because copper coinage was in short supply at this time, this firm produced its own copper tokens in 1794–95 (Walter Breen, Walter Breen’s Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins [New York, 1988], 102–4).
