The President Sends to the Secretary of State the enclosed letter from Mr. Chiappe, which has been forwarded by Mr. Simpson at Gibralter. If, upon translating this letter, there should be found in it any thing important to be communicated to the President—the Secretary will do it when the President arrives in Philadelphia.
The President proposes to set out from this place on sunday next.

Enclosures: (1) Francisco Chiappe to Washington, Rabat, 20 Mch. 1793, acknowledging his letter of 8 Nov. 1791 and TJ’s of 13 May 1791, and reminding him that since then he has sent news through Barclay at Gibraltar; complaining that he has received neither an official American title nor an annual salary and advising that Barclay agrees that his claim is just and will write to Washington on the subject; stating that he deserved some distinction for his good offices, which had saved the United States from war several times, and that an early reply would bode well for continued American tranquility; and reporting that the kingdom continues on the same footing, with Muley Suliman at Mequinez and Muley Ischem at Morocco (RC in DLC: Washington Papers, in Italian, endorsed by Lear as received 30 June 1793; Dupl in DNA: RG 59, MLR, at head of text: “Duplicato”; recorded in SJL as received 8 July 1793).
