To George Washington from Thomas Jefferson, 19 June 1793

From Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia] June 19th 1793

Thomas Jefferson has the honor to inclose to the President translations of some communications from Messrs Viar & Jaudenes,1 also a letter for Mr Pinckney.2

LB, DNA: RG 59, GW’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State.

1The letter from José de Jaudenes and José Ignacio de Viar to Jefferson of 18 June described “different acts practised” by Gov. William Blount and others in the Southwest Territory that were “contrary” to the 1790 Treaty of New York, between the United States and the Creek Indians, “which your government wishes to maintain.” These acts also “manifest views very distinct from those pacific and friendly ones towards our nation and those Indians, of which the US. have so repeatedly assured us.” To support their assertions, the Spanish diplomats enclosed a letter from the Cherokee nation to Louisiana governor Carondelet (Jaudenes and Viar to Jefferson, 18 June, Jefferson Papers description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends , 26:313–17). For the administration’s reaction to the Indian and Spanish complaints, see Cabinet Opinion, 20 June; JPP description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends , 183.

2The enclosed letter to Thomas Pinckney, the U.S. minister to Great Britain, has not been identified.
