1. The letter from José de Jaudenes and José Ignacio de Viar to Jefferson of 18 June described “different acts practised” by Gov. William Blount and others in the Southwest Territory that were “contrary” to the 1790 Treaty of New York, between the United States and the Creek Indians, “which your government wishes to maintain.” These acts also “manifest views very distinct from those pacific and friendly ones towards our nation and those Indians, of which the US. have so repeatedly assured us.” To support their assertions, the Spanish diplomats enclosed a letter from the Cherokee nation to Louisiana governor Carondelet (Jaudenes and Viar to Jefferson, 18 June, Jefferson Papers description begins Julian P.
