From George Washington to Thomas Jefferson, 2 June 1792

To Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia, 2 June 1792]1

I wish more favorable explanations than I expect, from your interview with the British Minester.2

AL, DLC: Jefferson Papers.

1Jefferson’s docket indicates that this letter was “recd June 2. 1792.”

2For the diplomatic exchange between Jefferson and British minister George Hammond concerning the nonexecution of various provisions of the Treaty of Paris of 1783, see GW to Jefferson, c.5–6 Mar., source note and note 2, and Jefferson to GW, 16 May, n.3. Hammond, who on this date wrote a brief response to Jefferson’s list of grievances of 29 May, could not meet with the secretary of state in person until the following day. For Jefferson’s notes of his inconclusive conversation with Hammond of 3 June 1792, see Jefferson Papers, description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends 24:26–33.
