Notes on Cotton, [ca. 24 March 1792]

Notes on Cotton

[ca. 24 Mch. 1792]

Cotton.

Dunlap’s paper. 1792. Mar. 24.

Nashville. ‘I have made 600. ℔. of cotton on half an acre of land, but on a moderate calculation an acre will produce 1000. ℔.’

MS (DLC); entirely in TJ’s hand; undated.

TJ copied from an extract in Dunlap’s American Daily Advertiser, taken in turn from a 1 Oct. 1791 letter to the editor appearing in the 3 Mch. 1792 issue of Bowen’s Virginia Centinel & Gazette: or, the Winchester Political Repository, in which an unnamed correspondent writing from Cumberland in the Southwest Territory described a visit to the cotton manufactory of John Hague in Nashville on 22 Sep. 1791 and reported that the fall cotton crop would be abundant.
