Gentlemen of the Senate.
I nominate the above-named persons for the commissioned officers of twelve companies—This nomination will complete the company officers of the additional troops, according to the arrangement which will hereafter be made, in pursuance of the powers vested in me by law.5

A note at the end of the list reads: “Those marked with ✻ served with reputation in the levies last year.”
1. Cochran’s given name was actually Samuel (see GW to the U.S. Senate, 8 May [second letter]).
2. John Paine resigned his ensign’s commission in October 1792. He served as a brigadier general of Kentucky volunteers in 1812–13.
3. William MacRea (McRea; d. 1832), who had served as a lieutenant in the levies of 1791, was promoted to captain in October 1794, and he was honorably discharged from the army in November 1796. MacRea returned to the service as a captain in June 1798. He was promoted to major in July 1800, lieutenant colonel in April 1814, and colonel in April 1824.
4. GW inserted this name in his own writing.
5. The Senate received GW’s message from Tobias Lear on this date, read it, and ordered it to lie for consideration. The next day consideration of the nominations was again postponed. On 16 Mar. the Senate resolved to advise and consent to the appointments and ordered that the president be so informed ( 1:114–16). Tobias Lear notified Henry Knox of the Senate’s concurrence on 17 Mar. 1792 (DLC:GW).
