VII. Thomas Jefferson to Philip Freneau

Thomas Jefferson sends to Mr. Frenau a list of persons in Charlottesville who have desired to receive his paper. This mail should go by the Friday morning’s post always, which will meet the Charlottesville post at Richmond on the Thursday evening following, and on Saturday the mail will be at Charlottesville.
Thos. J. will pay Mr. Frenau the necessary advances as soon as he will be so good as to furnish him a note of them.
Tr (DLC); in an unidentified hand; the names of subscribers are bracketed in the margin and are the same eleven, given in the same order, which TJ listed in his letter to Thomas Bell on the 16th.
Entries in Account Book show that on 23 May 1792 TJ paid John Fenno for half a year’s subscription to Gazette of the United States; that on 8 Jan. 1793 he paid Freneau for a year’s subscription (two copies); and that on 22 Nov. 1793 he “gave Philip Frenau order on bank for 18.75 to wit for myself to Oct. 26.93. 6 [dollars].” The last payment perhaps covered subscriptions for some of the individuals named in TJ’s letter to Bell of 16 Mch. 1792 as well as that of two copies for himself.
