From George Washington to Thomas Harwood, 27 December 1791

To Thomas Harwood

Philadelphia, Dec. 27th 1791.

Sir,

Be pleased to pay to Thomas Johnson, David Stuart, and Daniel Carroll esquires, Commissioners of the Federal district, or to their order, or the order of any two of them—twenty-four thousand Dollars, in part of the Seventy-two thousand dollars given by the Assembly of Maryland, towards the defraying the expences of the public Bu[i]ldings within the said District.1

1As the state of Maryland was obligated in January 1792 to make the first of three payments on the $72,000 it had pledged for the construction of buildings in the Federal City, Thomas Harwood, the treasurer of Maryland’s Western Shore, notified the Commissioners for the District of Columbia on 22 Dec. 1791 that an order for £9,000 would be paid on or after 1 Jan. 1792 (DNA: RG 42, General Records, Letters Received, 1791–1867).
