Tobias Lear to Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia] 30 August 1791. At the request of Attorney General Edmund Randolph, encloses for the office of the secretary of state fifteen patents signed by the president.1

1Thomas Jefferson docketed the receiver’s copy: “The Secy of State 30th Augt 1792” and listed on it that the enclosed patents were for Englebert Cruse, James Rumsey, Nathan Read, John Stevens, Jr., John Fitch, James Macomb, and John Biddis & Thomas Bedwell for improvements in steam power, milling, distilling, and tanning (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters).
