While at Charleston I appointed Robert Cochran of that place to command the revenue Cutter for the station of South Carolina, & empowered him, with the approbation of the Governor & general Moultrie, to appoint his mates.1
I have appointed John Howell Commander—Hendricks Fisher, first Mate, and John Wood second mate of the revenue Cutter to be stationed on the coast of Georgia.2 You will transmit the Commissions and your instructions to these Gentlemen. I am, sir, Your most Obedt servt

William Jackson wrote from Augusta on this day to John Habersham, federal customs collector at Savannah, informing him of the president’s appointment of the officers of the Georgia revenue cutter and requesting him to inform the secretary of the treasury if the two mates should decline their appointments (DLC:GW). Native Georgian John Wood was recommended to GW on 6 May by George Houstoun, John Wallace, Leonard Cecil, and Robert Bolton, the commissioners of pilotage of Savannah (DLC:GW).
