Baltimore [Md.] Feby 18th 1791

Sir

I have taken the liberty of addressing you; on the Subject of an Appointment, Under the Bill laying an Excise on ardent Spirits, either made, or imported into the United States, (provided the same passes into a Law)—and to Solicit for the Appointment of the Supervisor, for the District of the State of Maryland; I have not the Honor to be personally acquainted with you Sir, but am with many of the members of Congress, particularly with the Honorable Messrs Henry Bassett & Gale,1 to whom I beg leave to refer you, for my Abilities & Integrity; And if I shou’d be so happy as to meet with your Approbation for this Appointment the favor will be gratfully Acknowledged—by Sir Your Most Obt Hm. Servt

Andrew Skinner Ennalls

Andrew Skinner Ennalls was a member of a Dorchester County, Md., family. He was the son of Thomas Ennalls (d. 1746) and his wife Ann Skinner Ennals, daughter of Andrew Skinner (Biographical Dictionary of the Maryland Legislature, description begins Edward C. Papenfuse et al., eds. A Biographical Dictionary of the Maryland Legislature, 1635–1789. 2 vols. Baltimore, 1979–85. description ends 1:307, 311; Jones, New Revised History of Dorchester County, description begins Elias Jones. New Revised History of Dorchester County, Maryland. Cambridge, Md., 1966. description ends 276). He received no appointment from GW.

1. Ennalls was referring to Maryland senator John Henry (1750-1798), Delaware senator Richard Bassett (1745-1815), and Maryland congressman George Gale (1756-1815).
