To Thomas Jefferson from William Vans Murray, [1791–1793]

From William Vans Murray

Thursday Morng. [1791–1793] 275. So. Front.

Mr. Murray returns “The Preface to Belendenus” with many thanks to Mr. Jefferson—and begs leave to add the pamphlet which accompanies this (, as a Juvenile essay,) to Mr. Jefferson’s collection of American pieces.

RC (DLC: Rare Book and Special Collections); partially dated; inserted in presentation copy of Enclosure No. 2. Enclosures: (1) [Samuel Parr], A Free Translation of the Preface to Bellendenus; containing Animated Strictures on the Great Political Characters of the Present Time, trans. William Beloe (London, 1788). The Latin original of Parr’s work appeared with his edition of the works of the poet William Bellenden in 1787 and was published separately the next year. See Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends No. 2772. (2) [William Vans Murray], Political Sketches, inscribed to his Excellency John Adams, Minister Plenipotentiary from the United States to the Court of Great Britain (London, 1787). See Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, Washington, D.C., 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends No. 3151.

Murray clearly wrote this and the following letter when both he and TJ were in Philadelphia, most likely at some point during 1791–93 when he was attending Congress as a representative from Maryland.
