To Thomas Jefferson from Richard R. Saltonstall, 5 February 1790

From Richard R. Saltonstall

New York, 5 Feb. 1790. Seeking a post in which he can acquire knowledge while supporting himself, he requests “an appointment under you” and refers to Senator William Samuel Johnson of Connecticut, who has promised to “mention me to you.”

RC (DLC: Washington Papers, Applications for Office); 1 p.; unaddressed; endorsed by TJ as received 6 Apr. 1790 and so recorded in SJL.

The following letters pertain to recommendations for positions in the Department of State: (1) Zachariah Burnley to TJ, 28 Feb. 1790, recommending the appointment to a Department of State clerkship of his son, who was about 23 years of age, had been “bound” to Hollingsworth & Johnson of Richmond, and was currently living in New York with Colonel William Davies, “who I think is Imployed by Congress to settle the Accounts betwixt the diferent States” (RC in DLC: Washington Papers, Applications for Office; addressed: “To the Honourl. Thomas Jefferson Esqr.”; endorsed by TJ as received 28 Feb. 1790 and so recorded in SJL). (2) Arthur Greer to TJ, Reading, 16 Mch. 1792, requesting confirmation that a State Department clerkship had become vacant and offering to come to Philadelphia with the best recommendations (RC in same; at foot of text: “The Honorable Thomas Jefferson Esquire”; endorsed by TJ as received 19 Mch. 1792 and so recorded in SJL). (3) Elias Boudinot to TJ, 31 Mch. 1792, recommending, with reference to the same opening, a 25-year-old son of “one of the Judges of our Supr. Court” (RC in DNA: RG 59, LAR; dated “Saturday afternoon”; addressed: “The Honble Mr Jefferson”; endorsed by TJ as received 31 Mch. 1792, a Saturday, and so recorded in SJL, where it is mistakenly listed as a 30 Mch. 1792 letter). None of these letters accomplished their objectives.
