Sir.

As the time for making appointments under the Treasury Law draws near, I beg leave to Request Your Excellency’s remembrance of the present Treasurer, who has the honor to be with the greatest Respect Your Excellency’s most Obedt humble Servt

Michael Hillegas (1729–1804), a Philadelphia merchant, had spent most of his long career in public service, serving his state in the provincial assembly 1765–75 and in a long list of local administrative positions. Appointed Continental treasurer in 1775 by the Continental Congress, he was named treasurer of the United States in September 1776 and served until the creation of the new Treasury Department in September 1789 when Samuel Meredith was made treasurer.
