18th. (Adams Papers)
I arose in the morning quite refresh’d, and immediately after breakfast went and took my station in the office. I began upon the first volume of Robertson’s history of Charles the V. which Mr. Parsons recommended as containing an account of the feudal institutions, from which were derived many of the laws which are now established in different parts of Europe. I have already read the book; but...

Col: Hamilton expressed himself with great earnestness and anxiety in favor of the motion. He avowed himself a friend to a vigorous Government, but would declare at the same time, that he held it essential that the popular branch of it should be on a broad foundation. He was seriously of opinion that the House of Representatives was on so narrow a scale as to be really dangerous, and to...
Your Letter of the 7 th . Inst: together with the two numbers of the American Museum mentioned in it, have been delivered to me. The Design of the work is certainly a good one, and if no Pieces but such as merit the Attention of the public and of Posterity be inserted, it will become useful and interesting. As it will always give me Pleasure to promote the Progress of useful Knowledge, I will...

I had the honor of addressing to your Excellency on the 3d. of July some observations on the letter of Monsieur de Calonnes of Octob. 22. 1786. relative to the commerce of France with the United States of America; of proposing to it some small amendments; and of expressing a wish that it might be put into such form as would secure it’s execution. Monsieur de Villedeuil, then Comptroller...
Mr. Madison objected to a trial of the President by the Senate, especially as he was to be impeached by the other branch of the Legislature, and for any act which might be called a misdemesnor. The President under these circumstances was made improperly dependent. He would prefer the supreme Court for the trial of impeachments, or rather a tribunal of which that should form a part. Ms ( DLC ).
I have taken the Liberty to send you a reflecting Lamp for your Hall. I well know your Delicacy on the Subject of accepting the smallest Present even from your best Friend; but I as well know your Patriotism, & that when it has come in Competition with your own Feelings the latter have ever yielded. That Light is an Object of immense Consequence no one will venture to deny, & that the...
