From George Washington to Elizabeth Powel, 12 June 1787

To Elizabeth Powel

Tuesday [c.12 June 1787]

Genl Washington presents his Compliments to Mrs. Powell & begs to know at what hour she would choose to have the Carriage—at 7 Oclock it is to go to Mr & Mrs Lloyd.

AL, ViMtvL. GW’s carriage was not available to him in Philadelphia after the end of July, and he was otherwise engaged on the last three Tuesday nights in July, suggesting that this missive to Mrs. Powel must have been dated no later than 10 July (GW to Samuel Powel, 25 July; Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 5:176, 178, 179). The only Tuesdays after his arrival in Philadelphia until 11 July not otherwise accounted for in his diaries are those of 10 July, when he went to the theater outside the city to see the farce High Life below the Stairs, and the night of 12 June when he attended Alexander Reinagle’s concert at the City Tavern, which began at 7:45. It is perhaps only giving GW the benefit of the doubt to assume that he conducted Mrs. Powel and the Lloyds to the concert on 12 June and not to the farce on 10 July. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd may be James Lloyd (c.1756–1830) of Kent County, Md., and his wife Elizabeth, the daughter of GW’s old friend James Tilghman and sister of Tench and James Tilghman, Jr.
