Since my last to you of the 18 Augt.———I have received and laid before Congress the Letters you did me the Honor to write on the 18. July last.
I have some Dispatches of Importance ready for you, but I prefer sending them by a Conveyance that will offer about ten Days hence.
I enclose a certified copy of an Act of Congress for recalling Mr. Lamb, another Copy has been sent to Mr. Adams.
As the Dispatches above alluded to are particular, I shall at present only add an Assurance which I always make with Pleasure, Vizt. that I am with very sincere Esteem and Regard Dr Sr Your most ob. & hble servt.

Enclosure: Resolution of Congress of 26 Sep. 1786: “That the commission and instructions issued to Mr. John Lamb, for the purpose of negotiating with the Barbary powers, be and they are hereby vacated and annulled; and that the Secretary for foreign Affairs take the necessary measures for directing Mr. Lamb immediately to repair to New York” (, xxxi, 692).
The letters … on the 18th: An error for TJ’s letter of 8 July, at which time he wrote only one letter with numerous enclosures, transmitted by Jay to Congress on 26 Sep. (DNA: PCC, No. 87). Some dispatches: Jay to TJ, 3 Oct. 1786, sent with Jay to TJ, 27 Oct. 1786.
