To John Jay from Peter Van Schaack, 21 February 1786

From Peter Van Schaack

[Kinderhook 21 Feby 1786]

Dear Sir

I trouble you with this Letter, rather to gratify, by giving Expression to my own Feelings, than to communicate any Thing worthy of Your Notice. I have been in a State of anxious Suspense about a Matter agitated at New York in which you was a Party, for Want of the Publications, which have been neglected to be sent to me according to my Directions. At length I have seen them, and under the Impressions of a recent Perusal of them, I cannot help telling You how much I am rejoiced to find that perfect Consistency of Character, and Propriety of Conduct, which have distinguished You through Life displayed in every Part of this Transaction. I was at Times a little alarmed with the Vague Rumours and indistinct Reports We had here; but sure I am that those who are not convinced now, must love Darkness rather than Light, and that because their Intentions as they respect You are evil.1

I sincerely hope you and Mrs Jay enjoy Health and that you may long continue to do it, none of your Friends wish more fervently than I do. As a Friend I love and esteem You; as a Citizen (and permit me to add as a Patriot) I consider your Abilities as an Ornament, and your Integrity as a Blessing to Your Country. May she long continue to enjoy and to set a proper Value on so rare an Assemblage of great and good Qualities! These are the Sincere Dictates of my Heart.

I have been several Times disappointed of the Pleasure I expected of seeing Miss Kitty, but Tomorrow or next Day, if the Snow does not fail, I hope to have it, either at Hudson or the Manor I am Dear Sir Most Sincerely Yours

Peter VanSchaack
