To John Jay from William Temple Franklin, 15 September 1785

From William Temple Franklin

Philadelphia 15. Sept. 1785.

Dear Sir

I am so well acquainted with your Regard for my Grandfather, that I know it will give you Pleasure to learn his safe Arrival in this Country, and that his Health is not the least impair’d by the Voyage. Mr. Williams, Ben,1 & myself accompanied him. We got in Yesterday after a Passage of about six Weeks from the Isle of Wight. Our Absence from Paris dates from the 12. of July. We left all your Friends there in good Health, and are charged by them to say many affectionate Things to both you and Mrs. Jay. But as I am rather hurried at present, and as I hope soon to have the Pleasure of waiting on ^you^ at New-York, I shall defer till then so agreable a Commission. Inclosed are what Letters & Papers I at present have for your Excellency in my Possession. If when we have effected the unpacking of our Things, more should be found, they shall be instantly forwarded.

My Grandfather has been received in this City with every possible Mark of Esteem & Affection, by all Parties & all Ranks. The Number of Visitors, may perhaps prevent his writing to your Excellency by this Post, I think it my Duty therefore to inform you, that one of the last Acts he performed as your Minister in Europe, was signing the Commercial Treaty with Prussia.2

Please to present to Mrs. Jay my most affectionate Respects & believe me with great Truth & Esteem, Dear Sir, Your most obedt & grateful humble Servant

W.T. Franklin

P.S. I take the Liberty of inclosing a small Letter, which I request may be forwarded by the Packet of this Month if not too late.—

J. Jay Esqr

ALS, NNC (EJ: 7835). Enclosures not found.

1Jonathan Williams Jr. and Benjamin Franklin Bache.

2On the Prussian treaty, see JJ to JA (second letter), 4 May 1786, and note 4, below.
