8The Loge du Patriotisme was constituted at Versailles in 1780. It held public concerts to benefit its philanthropic mission, the relief of widows, orphans, and the infirm. Among its members, many of whom held bureaucratic positions at court, were several musicians and composers. Nogaret, who had joined the lodge the year before and would become the next venerable, wrote the libretti for many of the lodge’s operas: Le Bihan, Francs-maçons parisiens, pp. 25, 376; Roger Cotte, La Musique maçonnique et ses musiciens (2nd ed., rev. and enl., Paris, 1987), pp. 22, 44–5, 49–50, 60–2, 80.

9In Nogaret’s hand.

2Très Vénérable et Très cher frère.

1L’Orient. The two abbreviations later in the dateline stand for Vraie Lumière. The masonic year began on March 1.

3Très Respectable frère.

4Les Nombres et avec Tous les honneurs qui vous Sont dûs, a variation on the standard masonic closing (XXXVI, 113n).

5The following members are listed in Le Bihan, Francs-maçons parisiens: François-André Vauchelle, venerable of the lodge, was commis principal de la guerre; Pierre Terrasse de Mareilles was secrétaire de la feuille des bénéfices and garçon de la Chambre de la Reine; Marie-Nicolas-Guillaume-Jacques Le Baillif Le Menager was a military officer; Louis Louis was a commis in the department of war; and Jean-Baptiste Cuillié was a commis des finances. Simon Simon, a harpsichordist and composer, was maître de clavecin des enfants de France as well as the instructor of the queen and the comtesse d’Artois: Stanley Sadie, ed., The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2nd ed., 29 vols., London, 2001).

6Probably a Libertas Americana medal. Once he received BF’s acceptance, Nogaret invited WTF to accompany BF and stay for the banquet. Dress code was “costume noir,” the hour was 11 A.M. (if WTF came later, he would miss the inauguration ceremony), and there was no admission fee: Nogaret to WTF, undated, APS. A four-page program of the inauguration entitled “Les Trois grades,” in Nogaret’s hand, is among BF’s papers at the APS. The musical ceremony included a march, ariettas, recitatives, and a symphony for the reconstruction of the Temple. During the festivities that followed Nogaret recited a poem composed for the occasion (“A M. Franklin”) in which he honored BF, a fellow brother, as the protector of humanity and the hero of liberty. It was printed in the Almanach littéraire for 1784, p. 264, where a note states: “Ces vers ont eté prononcés devant M. Franklin à Versailles, à une Fête patriotique qu’il embellit de sa presence.”
