6Lafayette had arrived in Paris the previous day. The Queen herself brought his wife home from the banquet at the Hôtel de Ville (in honor of the birth of the dauphin) in order to greet him. On Jan. 22 he reported to the King and paid his respects. Soon he was rewarded for his services in Virginia by promotion to maréchal de camp: Louis Gottschalk, Lafayette and the Close of the American Revolution (Chicago, 1942), pp. 348–50; Jour. de Paris, Feb. 2, 1782.
