From John Jay to Floridablanca, 2 April 1781

To Floridablanca

Madrid 2d. April 1781

Sir

Be pleased to accept my Thanks for having ordered the Ballance due on the Cloathing, purchased by Mr Harrison, to be paid;1 & for having so arranged the Payment of the Money to which the Bills of this month amount, as to enable the Embassador of France effectually effectually to interpose his kind offices to relieve me from the distressing necessity of protesting them.2

I lament the Embarrassments which your Excellency has experienced on this Occasion, and am persuaded that both his Majesty & your Excellency are sincerely disposed to realize the assurances of Friendship made thro’ me to the United States. I flatter myself that this Friendship will continue to be manifested by such additional Aids, as it may be convenient to his Majesty to supply; and I am confident that they will meet with such Returns from my Country, as Gratitude may dictate, and the Situation of their affairs permit.

It will I hope soon be in my power to speake more explicitly on this Subject, and to give your Excellency higher Proofs than Professions of the Sincerity with which Congress desire that a friendly Connection between the two Countries may be formed and and rendered convenient & agreable to both, by a constant Interchange of mutual good offices— I have the Honor to be with perfect Respect & Consideration your Excellencys most obedient & most hble Servt

John Jay

His Exy the Count De Florida Blanca.—
