From George Washington to Colonel William Malcom, 12 November 1780

To Colonel William Malcom

Head Quarters Passaic Falls 12th Novemr 1780

Sir

Your favors of the 12th 14th and 29th ulto all came to hand by yesterdays post. How the two first were so long on the way I cannot tell. The disagreeable intelligence contained in them had reached me from other quarters.1 The blow upon the Western Frontier will be severely felt by us in the course of the Winter. Indeed I know not how we are to make up the disappointment in the Bread of that Country.

I am convinced of your exertions in forwarding supplies to Fort schuyler, and you have my thanks for your activity upon that occasion.2 I am sir Your most obt Servt

Go: Washington

LS, in Tench Tilghman’s writing, DNA:PCC, item 152; Df, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. GW signed the cover of the LS. “Wallkill” is written above struck out “Albany” on the cover. A note on the cover reads: “This Letter has been opened by Genl [James] Clinton.”

1See Malcom to GW, 12 Oct., and the source note to that document; see also Malcom to GW, 29 October. Malcom’s letters reported successful British incursions along the New York frontier.
