Elizth-Town [N.J.] 11th Novr 1780
Mr and Mrs Lloyd present their respectful Compliments to His Excellency General Washington They fully intended themselves the honour of waiting on His Excellency on their way through this State—but the very rapid aproach of Winter, and the Children being somewhat indisposed to day—obliges Mr Ll: to settle his Family at Philadelphia, or in Maryland before he can have the honour of being at Head Quarters.

Richard Bennett Lloyd (1750–1787) and his wife Joanna Leigh Lloyd (1758–1814) had children born in 1776, 1778, and 1780. A fourth child was born in 1784. Richard Lloyd, born in Talbot County, Md., had resigned as captain in the British army at the start of the Revolutionary War. For his plans to return with his family from London to the United States, see his letters to John Adams, 28 Dec. 1779, in 8:306, and to Benjamin Franklin, 8 Jan. 1780, in , 31:350–51. Lloyd experienced financial problems and eventually struggled with drunkenness (see David Humphreys to GW, 11 Feb. 1786, in 3:556–58). Joanna Lloyd married a second time in 1788 to Francis Love Beckford, of Basing Park, Hampshire, England.
