General Orders

Head Quarters Totowa Friday November 10th 1780

Watchword Never fear

[Officers] For the Day Tomorrow[:] Brigadier General Huntington[,] Colonel Wyllys[,] Lieutenant Colonel Mellen[,] Major Ballard[,] Brigade Major Sewall.1

The Marechausie and Bedkin’s corps are to take post on the left of the Army near the Light Infantry, and receive orders from Major General the Marquis de la Fayette.2

1. Capt. Henry Sewall wrote in his diary entry for 11 Nov.: “Was B.M. for the day. Dined with Genl. Howe” (Maine Farmer [Augusta], 12 Oct. 1872; see also General Orders, 9 Nov., and n.3).

2. Major General Lafayette then commanded the Light Infantry. The Maréchaussée Corps and Capt. Henry Bedkin’s light dragoon company had been overlooked in the recent reorganization of the Continental army (see General Orders, 1 Nov.; GW to Samuel Huntington, 26 Nov.; and Ward, Washington’s Enforcers description begins Harry M. Ward. George Washington’s Enforcers: Policing the Continental Army. Carbondale, Ill., 2006. description ends , 145–46, 148).
