From John Jay to William Carmichael, 16–17 June 1780

Madrid 16[–17] June 1780

Dear Sir

On coming to this Place last M ^my Arrival here I unexpectedly^ found that Mrs. Jay had been and still was very much indisposed. The Col. had written for me, but neither his Letter, nor mine from Aranjues to Mrs. Jay, had ever come to Hand. She is now ^somewhat^ better tho far from well, having more Spirits than Strength, and rather an Exemption from Constant pain, than Health. In this Situation it would be cruel to leave her, especially as my being at ^my^ presence at aranjues is not immediately necessary, & the Court will so soon I am obliged by your Favr of Yesterday remove from thence here.

>I am obliged by your Favr of Yesterday.1 The Intelligence you give me ^is^ very agreable. Be pleased to Present my Compts of [Congratulations?] to Mr. Galvez on the Success of ^& Honor acquired by^ his Brother. Inform ^[in margin] Count Montmorin of the Reasons which induce me to deny deny myself the pleasure of dining with him on Sunday. Assure him of my Respect and best wishes—^

The Gentleman you allude to will probably arrive soon of such Intelli must give y Be pleased to keep for me ^& send when proper opportunities offer^ a regular journal of such Intelligence & occurances as may come to your Knowledge relative to the Objects and Business of the Legation and that when I right to Congress I may be the better enabled to inform them fully of their Affairs here. Should an opportunity offer I shall apprize you of it. ^Shd. any Event ^thing^ happen which might render my being at Aranjues necessary, give me notice of it immediately, and I will at all Events set out the moment I recieve it.^

I have told St John to carry my Trunk with him— The enclosed Letters are have been here some Days—^inform me when a Courier will set out for France.^ I shall write to you again on Monday or Tuesday— Mrs. Jay & the Col. prest thr Comps. to you. I am Dr Sir Your &

P.S. Remember the Notes of your Information in pursuance of the Instructions at Cadiz. Have everything ready for Audibert. Mrs not a Syllable yet from Dr Franklin.

As I shall not return to aranjuez to Day, agreable to the Notice I gave the Count D F B, I think it best to inform him of it, and for that purpose enclosed a Letter to him, wh. be so kind as to take care tha ^send it to him^ Deliver this Ev[enin]g.2 Yours &c.
