The above return with about One hundred Cattle received to day will furnish the Troops in Camp and General Maxwells Brigade with Twenty two days Bread & Eight days Meat at One pound of Beef ⅌ ration.2 If your Excellency thinks it proper the ration may be made up to a pound from the first of June and continued at that rate, And the deficiencys in May be settled in Each Brigade and the Army paid for such deficienceys[.] If this is agreeable to Your Excellency I presume it will be best to insert it in General Orders.3 I am Your Excellencys most Obedient Servt

1. The letter is undated, but Stewart wrote on a return dated 1 June. The letter is docketed 2 June.
2. Stewart wrote this letter below a “Return of Stores on hand at the Magazine Morris Town the 1st June 1780.” The return listed most provisions in barrels: 1,105 of flour; 300 of Indian meal; 20 of Indian corn; 166 of pork; 13 of salted beef; 16 of dried beef; 23 of fish; 3 of gammon, or cured bacon; 6 of clams; 70 of salt; 15 of beans; and 20 of “Damag’d Meat.” The return also showed 6 hogsheads of rum, 4 tierces of vinegar, and 15 firkins of butter.
