2The fatigue party probably worked under William Shute (1750–1841), who served in the commissary department from 1776 to spring 1780. He then became an ensign and paymaster in the 2d New Jersey Regiment and remained in the army until the end of the war. Shute later held of the office of postmaster in Elizabeth, N.J., and unsuccessfully sought nomination as commissioner of loans in that state (see Shute to GW, 4 Aug. 1790, in Papers, Presidential Series description begins W. W. Abbot et al., eds. The Papers of George Washington, Presidential Series. 19 vols. to date. Charlottesville, Va., 1987–. description ends 6:188). Shute again served in the U.S. Army as a major from January 1799 to June 1800 (see Hamilton Papers description begins Harold C. Syrett et al., eds. The Papers of Alexander Hamilton. 27 vols. New York, 1961–87. description ends , 22:129–31).
