[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

5One of a series of dinner invitations beginning in April, 1779, from the marquis and his stepson Antoine-Jean Amelot de Chaillou, a high government official and president of the Académie royale des sciences: XXIX, 275, 328–9; XXX, 268. Most are dated at least by the month and day. One exception invites BF to dine on Sunday, the 6th (APS).

6Nov. 29 fell on a Monday in 1779 and 1784; as is our custom, we choose the earliest possible date. Amezaga wrote WTF on Dec. 10, undoubtedly in 1779, to inquire about news of d’Estaing. He would attempt to dine at the Franklins’ on the 19th and the following day all of them would dine with Amelot. APS.
