Camp Rariton [N.J.] April 24: 1779.
Sir.
Since making a report, to your Excellency, on the 20th instant, I have received some advice of consequence; which is herewith communicated. The letters, from which the inclosed extracts are taken, were wrote before my transmittal of your Excellencys last orders.1 Some information, which particularly relates to those directions, is expected to day or tomorrow. I cannot entertain a doubt, but the number of troops, last proposed, to be employed in the expedition from Susquehannah, may be subsisted, while on that enterprize. 1. Flint enclosed extracts of two letters from John Chaloner and Charles White to Jeremiah Wadsworth, both dated 18 April. The first reads: “We have wrote Colo. Blaine of your anxiety to know his success and doubt not his writing you on that subject. We do not think the prospect of flour so gloomy as has been heretofore; nor do we profess to be over sanguine in procuring abundance, but with industry & care we doubt not a sufficiency may be obtained to support us untill the next crop comes in.” The second extract reads: “We would fain hope flour sufficient until the next crop comes in will be obtained for the support of the army in this district exclusive of any aid from Mr Aylette” (DLC:GW). By “your Excellencys last orders,” Flint apparently means GW to Jeremiah Wadsworth or Royal Flint, 20 April.
