Adj. Gen. Alexander Scammell’s orderly book entry for this date includes the following general orders: “1 C[aptain] 2 S[ubalterns] 3 S[ergeants] & 50 R[ank] & F[ile] from the 2nd Maryland Brigade for fatigue Tomorrow to parade at 9 oClock in the morning.

“The Clothier Genls Guard to be augmented with 8 privates from Genl Scotts Brigade—A Sub: from Genl Muhlenberg’s will take command of it.” (orderly book, 22 Dec. 1778–26 June 1779, DNA: RG 93, Orderly Books, 1775–1783, vol. 28).

GW’s aide-de-camp Alexander Hamilton wrote Lt. Col. Anthony Walton White from Middlebrook in a letter of this date that reads: “His Excelly received the inclosed representation some time since which through hurry of business has lain by till now. By his direction—I transmit it to you with a request, that you will write the particulars of this affair as soon as possible, that the owner of the horse may have justice done him, in some way or other. The General takes it for granted that the horse must have been pressed by proper authority for the public service as he cannot suppose you would have taken him on the principles represented by the Complainant. The supposition would be too injurious to be admitted” (DLC:GW). In his reply of 16 March from Lancaster, Pa., White explained to Hamilton “the particulars respecting the Horse of Thomas White & Robert Bowne,” which he had impressed a “day or two” after the Battle of Monmouth to replace his own jaded mount and subsequently lost track of after allowing it to be ridden by other dragoons despite his willingness to return the horse upon demand to Bowne, but not White, “who bore so bad a Character in that Neighbourhood. & I was well informed had been often & strongly suspected of sending Horses into the Enemys lines befour & would I am certain have sold this Horse had he an opportunity” (DLC:GW).
