Near Bedford [N.Y.] Novr 9th 1778

Sir

Your Excellencys letter of Yesterdays date Came to hand Last evening. the letter which I sent You by Cornet Wills was from Sir John Bolton the person whom Majr Talmadge Recommended To Your Excellency Some time ago. there will be no Dainger of his being discoverd. I do not know his Propper name my self, for Nither of those are.1

Inclosd Your Excellency will receive Some intelligence from Capt. Williams.2 he tells <m>e that it is from good Authority. also a York paper. I am Your Excellencys Obt Servant

1The enclosure in Scott’s letter to GW of 7 Nov. was from “Samuel Culper,” a pseudonym used by the spies Abraham Woodhull and Robert Townsend, not “John Bolton,” which was a pseudonym for Maj. Daniel Williams reads: “On Saterday last [7 Nov.] Two Thousand Hessians and the Seventy first Regiment embarked—The Troops that went to Long Island under pretence of taking Quarters Embarked at Red Hook on Saterday last—One Regiment of the Kings Guards and one hundred Fuziliers do duty at York—At the Seven Mile Stone lies Lord Rodney’s Regiment at Harlem Hights another British Regiment at Fort Washington General Knyphousen’s own Regiment; in Naugles Fields another British Regiment—Simcoes Corps has not left the bridge they all Stand as usual there—Their are about Sixty Waggons employed every night carrying Stores to the Shipping, nothing of the kind done in the day—The Inhabitants begin to think that there will not be a Garrison left in York, as they cant learn what Troops are to be left—Several Regiments that was Said to be for that purpose are since Ordered to embark—A number of the Merchants are preparing to go with the Fleet” (DLC:GW).
