3Marie-Françoise de Bournonville married Emmanuel, comte and later marquis de Châteaurenault (d. 1739), son of a famous admiral. Their daughter Marie-Sophie (b. 1727) became d’Estaing’s wife in 1746. DBF under Châteaurenault; Jacques Michel, La vie aventureuse et mouvementée de Charles-Henri, comte d’Estaing ([n.p., 1976]) p. 14.

4His identity eludes us. At about this time he sent an undated note saying he was very anxious to learn what had happened to d’Estaing since he left Sandy Hook. APS.
