1. Moylan enclosed Brig. Gen. David Forman’s letter to GW of 23 July 1777 and an intelligence report from an unnamed correspondent written on 24 July 1777: “I have had an Oppertunaty of Getting Some Intiligence from Staten Island Which I think may be Depended upon, You may be better Able to judge of the truth of it than i. the fleet that Saild the Other Day had Not Nigh all the troops on Board them thay was Sent on Board & Was Landed at Some other place the Person Who i Got this Acount from Says he thinks that there Was About 10 or 12 thousand in the fleet With a large Number of Horses & Waggons he Expects that this is an Army that Will act in the jerseys independant of the one Embarked he thinks the Fleet is Destined for Phila. or Along that Coast he Says thay are Numbering the Refugees from jersey With a Design of makeing them take Armes When they Enter the Province Which thay Expect to do in the Corse of 10 or 14 Days the Man is One Who has been Long Among them & Knows Most of their Manovers and in with Some of the Principle Officers he did not tell this With any Desighn or had Any thoughts of its being Communicated but Was Extorted from him by Art i[n] the Coarse of a Long Conversation” (DLC:GW). Moylan also enclosed a brief note written by the same unnamed correspondent that apparently was sent with the report of 24 July but written on a separate, small piece of paper: “There is a Capt. & Nine Horse men Station’d here by Col. Bland to Reconeter Along the Shore, i think it is Entirely Useless as thay Will not be Able to Get Any Inteligince” (DLC:GW). On the back of that note Moylan wrote: “The man engaged by me is affraid of an interuption of those who he engaged by my permission to cross to the Island and back.”
