From George Washington to Nicholas Cooke, 6 April 1776

To Nicholas Cooke

[Providence] Saturday Morning 6th April [1776]

General Washington’s Compliments to Governor Cooke and the Gentlemen of Providence, and acquaints them that he intended to have set out on his Journey this forenoon, had he not been prevented by their polite invitation which he will do himself the honor to accept.1

1. GW was “invited to an elegant Entertainment at Hacker’s Hall, provided by the Gentlemen of the Town, where after Dinner a Number of patriotic Toasts were drank” (Providence Gazette; and Country Journal, 13 April 1776). GW left Providence the next day. Joshua Hacker’s hall on Towne Street was a popular place for banquets, balls, and other social events.
