George Washington Papers

To George Washington from Brigadier General Joseph Spencer, 22 February 1776

From Brigadier General Joseph Spencer

22 February 1776. “Certifies that the Revd Nathl Eells at present the Chaplain of the 10th & 19th Regts engaged for four Months from the first of Jany last.”1

DS, DLC:GW. Although this document is not specifically addressed to GW, it was apparently sent to him as were other certifications of chaplain appointments about this time. See Nathanael Greene to GW, 21 Feb., William Heath to GW, 22 Feb., and Joseph Frye to GW, 24 Feb. 1776.

1Nathaniel Eells (1711–1786), a Congregational clergyman from Stonington, Conn., apparently returned home at the end of April, and in May the Connecticut general assembly appointed him chaplain of a regiment that was to be raised for the defense of New London and its vicinity.
