1. John Langfit has not been identified.

2. The slave Morris was the overseer of GW’s Dogue Run farm at Mount Vernon.

3. GW paid Abel Longdon (Longden) a total of £13.7.7 for “Flatting Stone from the Falls at Sundry times” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 336). This was probably brought by flats from the Great Falls of the Potomac River.

5. GW on 27 April “Set out with Mrs. Washington & Patsy Custis on my journey to Williamsburg” to attend to business at the spring session of the General Court (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:21). The Washingtons were also visiting relatives in New Kent and Westmoreland counties. They arrived at Eltham, the house of Mrs. Washington’s sister and her husband, Burwell Bassett, after dark on 30 April. GW went into Williamsburg on 2 May for two nights and on 6 May for five nights before leaving Eltham on 21 May with his family to pay visits in Westmoreland County to his brother John Augustine Washington and to his half brother Augustine’s widow, Anne Aylett Washington. The three arrived back at Mount Vernon on 30 May.
