1. Matthew Campbell (d. 1782) also signed a receipt for some of the wheat that GW delivered to Carlyle & Adam in 1767. See , folio 271.
2. This was to defray William Crawford’s expenses in laying claim to land for GW in western Pennsylvania. See GW to Crawford, 17 Sept. 1767, Crawford to GW, 29 Sept. 1767, and , folio 273. Crawford visited GW at Mount Vernon from 31 Mar. to 6 April (see , 2:47, 51–52).
3. Andrew Wales was a brewer in Alexandria. John Mercer founded a brewery at Marlborough and in 1766 began selling “Strong Beer and Porter” (Virginia Gazette [Rind; Williamsburg], 30 May 1766).
4. On 26 April GW “Set of for Williamsburg with Mrs. Washington, Jacky & Patcy Custis & Billy Bassett” (, 2:54).
5. Peyton’s ordinary was on Aquia Creek in Stafford County north of Fredericksburg.
6. The 8s. 9d. was for “putting a new pr of Shoes to his Boots.” See Guardian Accounts, 5 May 1769.
7. GW failed to include this amount in the column of figures on the right.
8. GW and his party arrived at the Bassetts’ Eltham on 30 April.
9. Arthur Lee (1740–1792) returned to Virginia in 1766 after studying medicine in Edinburgh and Leyden. He lived in Williamsburg for the next two years. Perhaps the Washingtons consulted him about Martha Parke Custis’s epilepsy.
