AD, General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 188.

GW records that on 9 June 1764 Samuel Moxley owed him this amount for the work of his smith, but he does not record Moxley’s payment in his account with him. See General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 54.

This was to complete payment for “70 Barrels of Indian Corn from my Plantations in Frederick ... @10/” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 182). Macrae was probably Allan Macrea.

GW shipped twenty of these hogsheads of tobacco in the William and Mary, six in the Polly Ogle, and eight in the Industry. See GW to Robert Cary & Co., 10 Aug., 8 Oct. 1764, and GW to James Gildart, 5 June 1764.

In his guardian account (30 April 1764) for John Parke Custis, GW has the entry, “By Mr McKay ... entrance to Dancing.” William McKay (Mackay) seems to have taught the children dancing for only one year, at a salary of £8.

Turner Crump’s “6 Months Wages” as overseer of GW’s carpenters, amounting to £17.10, was due on 10 Oct. 1764, and at that time Crump owed GW £7.5.5¼ (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 183). Crump did not continue after 1764 as GW’s employee, but in 1766 he rented a plantation from him.

“A Negro & Apprentice” belonging to Robert Wright began work on GW’s mill on 27 Sept., and Wright himself began work on 1 Oct. (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 1:334).

GW has an account with “Holferd Burck & others Ditchers” in General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 187, which indicates that GW paid Burck and his fellow workers a total of £20.7.6 for “ditching 271 Rod at my Doeg Run Plantation—@18d.,” apparently between September and 22 Dec. 1764.

Lund Washington paid one-half of the £20 to the ditchers (see note 7) on 20 Oct. “(during my [GW’s] absence to Williamsburg)” and £4 more on 22 Dec. 1764 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 187). Lund Washington came to Mount Vernon at this time as manager of the Mount Vernon farms (see Cash Accounts, August 1764, n.2; GW to Carlyle & Adam, 15 Feb. 1767).
