Orders

Parole: Tweed.

Winchester: Thursday, January 8th 1756.

All the Officers in town to attend Lieutenant Colonel Stephens immediately at Lemon’s House.1 As soon as the Congress is over,2 three of the youngest Subalterns, and Sergeant Waters,3 are to go immediately in pursuit of the two Deserters, who made their escape last night; and to use their utmost endeavours to apprehend them.4

Three days provision to be delivered to the Troops to-morrow, at twelve o’clock.

1. James Lemen (Lemon) operated a tavern in Winchester.

2. The purpose of the “Congress” was to have Adam Stephen read to the assembled officers GW’s Address of this date.

3. At least three men named Waters were in the Virginia Regiment at this time. Philemon Waters of Isle of Wight County was about 22 years old and had been in the regiment since Mar. 1754. William Waters, who was nearly 50 years old, enlisted in Oct. 1755 in Richmond County. John Waters, a blacksmith in Nansemond County and about 40, joined in Sept. 1755.
