From George Washington to John Greenwood, 20 February 1795

To John Greenwood

Philadelphia 20th Feb. 1795

Sir,

Your last letter, with its accompaniment, came safe to my hands on tuesday last.1

Enclosed you will receive Sixty dollars in Bank notes of the United States.2 In addition to which, I pray you to accept my thanks for the ready attention which you have at all times, paid to my requests; and that you will believe me to be, with esteem, Sir Your very Hble Servt

1Greenwood, a New York surgeon and dentist, was employed by GW to make and repair his false teeth. His letter has not been found. The previous Tuesday was 17 February.

2GW’s note of this transaction in his Cash Memoranda, 29 Sept. 1794–17 Aug. 1797, states that the payment was “in full for his services as Dentist to the present date” (RPJCB).
